Update and professional highlights from 2017/16/15

March - May 2017. John had a wonderful time making his first appearance with the highly acclaimed LIVE! THEATRE COMPANY in Newcastle upon Tyne. He played Johnny Yates - the old kitman - in THE RED LION. This amazing play is by the brilliant playwright PATRICK MARBER. Set in the dressing room of a modern non league football club, it deals with the relationships between 3 very different men of different ages. Incisive, passionate, deeply moving and incredibly funny, this new production (set in the North East) - pared down by legendary Artistic Director MAX ROBERTS and PATRICK MARBER to an intense 95 minutes - was a huge success receiving fantastic reviews from Press and Public. T.V Star STEPHEN TOMPKINSON played the lead character of the ambitious manager and award winning newcomer DEAN BONE played the brilliant young footballer. All 3 actors received incredibly positive, -"sublime"! - responses from the Public and Press alike. Most shows ended with standing ovations from the audience! Rumour has it that this production may get another outing later in the year?!

August 2016 - February 2017. Just before his theatrical adventure on Tyneside John completed an exhilarating 6 month contract with The BBC Radio Drama Company. He joined the RDC in mid August 2016 and, working mainly in London in the studios of Broadcasting House on Portland Place but often in the iconic recording studios in Maida Vale, he played dozens of different characters in dozens of different Radio plays! Productions for Radio 4 included ; - THE FORSYTES, INSPECTOR CHEN, LITTLE WOMEN, WATERSHIP DOWN, LEAVING, IPHIGENIA IN CRIMEA, HERALD OF DISASTER, TOMMIES, THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, THE AMATEUR MARRIAGE, NORTHANGER ABBEY, COOKING IN A BEDSITTER, GUDRUN'S SAGA, THE TIDEBREAK, SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND, THE MYSTERIES OF UDOLPHO, WILD THINGS, CONTROL, HOMEFRONT, AGNES GREY, JOURNEY TO PAKISTAN, THE CONFIDENTIAL AGENT, THE STRANGE CASE OF DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE, THE HEIST AT HATTON GARDEN, THE BONE ORCHARD. He also recorded dozens of readings for various Documentary/Factual programmes on Radio 3 and 4.

February -June 2016. John joined the regular cast of DCI BANKS to play forensic pathologist Dr John Wallace in 4 episodes of the acclaimed ITV Drama series starring the brilliant and popular Stephen Tompkinson. ( who, later suggested John for the part of Yates in THE RED LION! )

2015. As well as returning as the evil Assist Chief Constable Coulson in series 3 of WPC56 , John again showed his versatility as an actor in 2 highly moving and intense episodes of top medical drama Holby City, when he played Ron Renwick an emotionally unstable man who attempts to blow the hospital up in revenge for his wife's death.

He also filmed his first role on horseback as Catus Decianus - the vicious Roman Procurator whose orders to defile her children triggered Boudica's attacks against the Roman Empire - in "Barbarians Rising" an epic drama/doc series directed and exec produced by Simon George and filmed in Bulgaria for October Films. This series can be seen on The History Channel.

More fun and versatility came at the end of the year when he played belligerent caretaker/security guard Tom Johnson in a brilliant comedy film set in a public library in Kent written and exec produced by Andy Keen. Co-exec Producer was Sue Moyce and it was produced by Oliver Taheri. It was directed by BAFTA Award winning Director Nigel Douglas, who had directed John in the explosive episode of Holby City earlier in the year. So it was a lovely contrast in mood for both of them. The other main cast members were the fantastic Liam Jeavons - who had worked with John on two series of WPC56 - and the wonderful actress/writer Jane Slavin. Shot in a very distinctive cinematic style by D.O.P Steve Buckland and with sound designed by John Osborne - both of whom John had worked with on The Bill - with a terrific young crew, it was a positive end to 2015. .
